| SHERRY E. WHETSTONE Artist Bio &Statement Born in 1957, Sherry E. Whetstone is a free spirited Sagittarian who loves transforming fabric into intricate art quilts, embellished dolls, and unique gift items. In addition to her love of creating, she also is passionate about sharing her blessings of creativity by teaching classes and presentations. Her first piece, titled,” Rhythm in My Soul, the Dancer” gained the artist international status when it was selected for exhibition at the U.S. Embassy in Malawi, Africa from 1994 to 1997. Ms. Whetstone’s hand embellished art quilts have been featured in several quilting books and magazines. Textural Rhythms, by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, showcases quilts depicting jazz interpretations, is the most recent of publications in which Ms. Whetstone is featured . Other books include Black Threads: An African American Quilting Sourcebook, by Kyra Hicks, A Communion of the Spirits, a historical documentation of African American quilters, written and researched by Roland Freeman, Spirits of the Cloth: Contemporary African American Quilts, spotlights breath-taking quilts designed by African American artists and written by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. Also, Women of Taste: A Collaboration Celebrating Quilt Artists and Chefs, a book created to benefit Girls Inc., highlights 50 quilts created by female quilt artists and culinary mavens. Ms. Whetstone’s community oriented spirit has inspired her to travel to East Africa. Once there, she shares her teaching experience with young adults and children at the United African Alliance Community Center (UAACC) in Arusha, Tanzania. She states” My ultimate dream is to inspire and educate generations of people about the healing effects of art. It is my ultimate desire to help people develop individual creativity; to find inner peace though the process of creating art.” |
